What Makes a Traditional Lampshade?
Traditional lampshades are defined by their elegant shapes, carefully considered proportions and decorative finishing details. From sweeping curves to shaped panels, these classic designs have a character that sets them apart from simpler contemporary shades.
Shapes such as Empire, Bowed Empire and Scalloped lampshades have remained popular for generations. Their distinctive profiles work beautifully with traditional lamp bases, period interiors and more eclectic homes.
However, choosing a traditional shape doesn’t mean your lampshade has to look old-fashioned. Fabric, colour and finishing details can completely transform the final design.
Traditional Lampshade Making
Creating a traditional lampshade requires skill and attention to detail. We handmake our traditional lampshades in our Devon workshop using techniques developed through more than 60 years of British lampshade making.
Many traditional shapes use carefully formed frames to create their distinctive curves and proportions. Our experienced makers then cover and finish each shade by hand.
Decorative details can add even more character. For example, braid can highlight curved edges and individual panels. Fringe can create a softer, more decorative appearance. Together, these details help define the traditional style.

Frequently Asked Questions
What fabrics are available for traditional lampshades?
Brushed Cotton and Faux Silk
Our traditional shade builders offer brushed cotton and faux silk. Brushed cotton creates a soft, understated finish, while faux silk adds texture and a subtle sheen. Other designs may offer different fabrics, so check your chosen product. If you would like us to use your own material, contact us first so we can assess its suitability.
Can I request a fabric sample before ordering?
Yes.
We recommend viewing your chosen fabric and colour in your own interior before ordering. You can request samples through our Free Fabric Sample Request page, allowing you to compare the colours and textures at home.
Can I choose a contrasting trim?
Yes.
A contrasting trim can emphasise the shape of a traditional lampshade and create a more distinctive design. Alternatively, choosing a trim in a similar colour to the fabric creates a softer, more coordinated finish. View our Lampshade Builder to select a shape and experiment with Colours and trims.
Which fabric allows the most light through?
The amount of light that passes through your lampshade varies depending on the fabric and colour you choose. Lighter fabrics and colours generally allow more light through, while darker and heavier materials create a more atmospheric effect.
What traditional lampshade shape should I choose?
The best shape depends on your lamp base, the size of the room and the look you want to achieve. Empire and bowed shapes offer classic proportions, while scalloped designs introduce more decorative detail. If you’re unsure, our team will be happy to help you choose.
Can I create a bolder traditional lampshade?
Absolutely.
Traditional shapes don’t have to be understated. Strong colours, contrasting braid and decorative finishes can give a classic lampshade a much more individual appearance. You can also explore our Statement Lampshades for more distinctive designs.
Traditional With a Twist
Traditional doesn’t have to mean understated. Discover bold colours, contrasting trims and decorative fringes that give classic lampshade shapes a completely new personality. Rich colours and unexpected fabric combinations add character, while traditional silhouettes keep the look timeless.
